President ‘deeply concerned’ about incidence of crime

President David Granger is “deeply concerned” about the incidence of crime.

This is according to a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of the Presidency, which said although President Granger was satisfied with the speed at which crimes are being solved, he remained deeply concerned at the incidence of crime. As a result, while crime fighting efforts continue to be scaled up, the statement said he continues to meet every week with the National Security Committee.

The statement was issued in wake of the murder of Professor Pariedeau “Perry” Mars, who was killed at his home during a robbery on Thursday evening.

Granger, the statement said, condemned the “vicious act” and commended the Guyana Police Force for the swift arrests made in the case. He further called for justice to be quickly served, the statement added.

Up to yesterday morning, the Guyana Police Force had announced six arrests in connection with the murder as well as the recovery of items that had been stolen from Mars’ home in the attack.

Professor Mars served in various positions at several prestigious universities before taking up a post at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA, where he was Professor Emeritus. He was recognised for his work in African and Caribbean Studies. He also published several books in areas of his other academic interests. He was 75 years old.
