Speeding driver kills Corentyne fisherman

A Corentyne fisherman lost his life on Friday night after he was struck by a speeding car along the Kilcoy/Chesney Public Road.

Dead is Chetram Deonarine, 49, who was struck at around 11 pm in the area, where he resided.

Stabroek News was told that Deonarine, who was on his bicycle, was attempting to cross the road when the oncoming car, who had licence plate PSS 1636, struck him and pitched him a few feet away.

According to a police source, the driver of the car, Javid Balgobin, 24, alleged that a truck in front of him made an abrupt stop, causing him to hit Deonarine. It was also noted that Balgobin stated that he immediately applied brakes but the vehicle did not stop, causing him to collide with Deonarine.

Deonarine was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and he was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but died in transit.

Balgobin remains in police custody.
