Corentyne teen committed to stand trial for rape of girl, 12

Richard Sankar, who has been accused of forced sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl, was committed to stand trial at the next session of the Berbice Assizes, following a paper committal this week before Magistrate Marissa Mittelolzer at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

Sankar, 18, is alleged to have raped the minor between 16 and 17 May 2015. As a result of his committal, he was ordered to post an additional $150,000 bail. Initially, he was on $100,000 bail.

Police Sergeant Orin Joseph revealed that the defendant, a labourer, had been a visitor to the victim’s home having been a friend of her now deceased brother. The Grade Eight student too had visited Sankar’s home and it was during that period that the alleged sexual assault occurred. The incident was revealed after a school friend reported to their school’s headmaster about what was being told to her.
