Moments before Guyana welcomed its 50th year of being an independent nation, the people of Mahdia were urged to unite as they go into the next 50 years as an independent nation, GINA said.
That was the message from Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan who delivered the feature address at the flag-raising ceremony held at the Mahdia playfield and pavilion.
He said since independence and the declaration of Republican status, Guyana has come a long way but more needs to be done.
“For too long, people have been divided,” Bulkan noted, adding that, “The road ahead will not be easy, it will require dedication and hard work but with our combined efforts we will achieve our aim of providing a good life for all Guyanese.”
GINA said that Regional Chairman, Bonaventure Fredericks in his remarks echoed Bulkan’s call for unity. “I am sure that our forefathers would be proud to see how far we have come,” Fredericks stated.
The ceremony was also used to honour two residents of Mahdia who over the years, have served the region well. Lisa Hinds received a plaque for her contributions to health care in the region. Roger Hinds was honoured for his contributions to the business sector, GINA added.
When the ceremony came to an end, the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted. Fireworks then followed much to the delight of the crowd, GINA added.
