Sophia man charged with murdering elderly father

A Sophia man was yesterday arraigned for the murder of his father, whom he allegedly fatally beat while under the influence of alcohol.

It is alleged that between May 18th and May 23rd, at Sophia, Kumey Bourne, 37, murdered Rickford Bourne. He was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him by Sparendaam Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre.

According to Police Prosecutor Sergeant Ayesha Gibbons, Rickford, 70, went home from work and met his son, who was drinking alcohol and watching television.

After an altercation, Kumey allegedly picked up an iron bar and dealt his father several lashes to his head and body. Rickford, who was injured, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by a neighbour. On May 23rd, he succumbed to his injuries.

The police, in a press release, said that Rickford was allegedly struck to his head by the suspect during an argument.

Stabroek News, had been told that the accused went to his neighbour’s residence and he informed that he had just hit Rickford to his head because he refused to give him the television remote and a “raise.”

As a result of this, the neighbour reportedly informed Rickford’s daughter, who, upon checking on him, discovered that he had sustained three wounds to his head.

Bourne was remanded to prison by the magistrate, who adjourned the proceedings until June 29th.
