Lorry driver on bail over causing death charge

A Better Hope, East Coast Demerara lorry driver was released on $300,000 bail last week after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Shamdar Anthony Lagnah, 53, of Lot 115 Latchmi Street, Better Hope was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was released on bail by Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. Further, the magistrate ordered that the defendant’s driver’s licence and passport be lodged with the Clerk of Court. Lagnah also has to report to the Sparendaam Police Station every Monday at 9am until the determination of the case.

It is alleged that Lagnah on May 31 on the Belvedere Public Road, drove motor lorry GKK 9077 with Trailer TSS 2005, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Rajeshwar Rampadarat, 27, a labourer attached to Kris Jagdeo Enterprises.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Orin Joseph said Lagnah was behind the wheel of the tanker when he alleged that he saw the now deceased lying motionless on the road. Upon seeing this, he swerved away from the body before stopping his vehicle to check. Thereafter, the body was picked up and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where a Dr Chand certified the death.

The case is fixed for report on June 14 at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
