Mahdia cook embezzled $2.7m in gold -court told

A Mahdia cook was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with fraudulently converting more than $2 million in raw gold to his own use.

It is alleged that Ronald Saunders, 46, who gave his address as 122 East La Penitence, Georgetown, on June 13, 2015, at Karisparu Airstrip, being solely entrusted with 12 ounces of raw gold valued $2,760,000, in order that he would return the proceeds to Clint McKenzie, fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.

Saunders pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was remanded to prison until July 18 after prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail on the grounds that the accused was previously convicted for similar offences.  His next appearance will be at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
