Bartica youth remanded over Madewini mechanic’s murder

A young Bartician was yesterday charged with the murder of Madewini mechanic Puranand Baljit and remanded to prison after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

20160615mechanicmurderRayon Jones, 20, of 121 Fourth Avenue Bartica, was charged with murdering Baljit on June 9th, at Madewini, in the course or furtherance of a burglary. He was not required to plead to the capital offence when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Attorney Latchmie Rahamat entered an appearance for Jones and requested that the preliminary inquiry be done by way of a paper committal. The matter was transferred to the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, where it will be heard on July 5th. Jones has been remanded until that date.

It was previously reported that Baljit, called ‘Andrew,’ 25, of Lot 57 Madewini, was found on Thursday night bleeding on his bed, and bearing multiple stab wounds about the body, including one in the region of his heart.

It is suspected that the killer had not entered the house but stabbed Baljit through his bedroom window, having stacked several concrete blocks. The man’s parents reportedly heard screams coming from his bedroom, and upon checking, found him in bed, lying in a pool of blood. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. A knife and a cellular phone were recovered by the police at the scene of the crime.

Subsequent investigations established that the motive of the crime was robbery.
