Two in custody over suspected molestation of three-year-old girl

A woman and a man are currently in custody as police investigate the suspected molestation of a three-year-old girl in Berbice.

According to information, the three-year-old lives with her mother; father, who is a fisherman; and her two brothers, aged nine and 14.

Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam said that the mother discovered the three-year-old child bleeding heavily and made a report at the Springlands Police Station on Sunday. A subsequent medical examination revealed that the child’s hymen was ruptured.

Initially police held the child’s mother and brothers for questioning, but subsequently released the two boys.

While the child did not name anyone, Amsterdam said, police subsequently held a man “who had some interaction with the mother, sometime earlier in the day.” However, he emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing at this time. According to Amsterdam, the woman said the man was a friend.

The three-year-old has been admitted to hospital and is in a stable condition.
