Market worker jailed for cocaine possession

A 57-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to cocaine possession.

Lester Singh of 875 Wismar Housing Scheme was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where the charge read to him stated that on July 4, at Stabroek Market he had in his possession five grammes of cocaine

Singh, who told the court that he works around Stabroek Market, pleaded guilty to the offence.

According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, at around 07:00 hrs police were on patrol duty at the market when they observed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.

The court heard that the officers approached Singh and carried out a search which led to the discovery of several parcels containing a white substance suspected to be cocaine.

The prosecution stated further that after the substance was found, the defendant was told of the offence, cautioned, arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where the packets were as weighed in his presence.

Chief Magistrate McLennan later sentenced the defendant to three years’ imprisonment and fined him $30,000.
