Robbers shoot Pouderoyen businessman

Two masked robbers last evening shot a Pouderoyen businessman and then fled with a quantity of cash, jewellery and electronics that they grabbed from his home.

Police are currently questioning a suspect, who was picked up moments after the robbery was carried out.

The wounded businessman, Prakash Seegobin, 51, who was shot in his left thigh, is currently a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital in a stable condition.

Police sources told Stabroek News that the men entered the Lot 3 Bella Dam, Pouderoyen home through a beer garden that Seegobin operates. One of the men was armed with a handgun, while the other had a knife.

After gaining entry into the premises, the men herded Seegobin’s wife and children along with other family members to the upper flat, where they were locked in a bedroom.

The bandits ransacked the home, according to a source, and escaped with $500,000 in cash, as well as jewellery a laptop and a tablet.

Stabroek News understands that as the bandits were making their way out of the house, Seegobin followed and as a result he was shot.

The bandits escaped on foot, with each man going in a different direction. However, quick response by the police, led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man, who was being treated as a suspect.

A source explained that the man was seen running through Samaroo Dam when he was stopped and questioned by police. Due to the unsatisfactory explanation he gave to ranks, he was arrested and taken to the La Grange Police Station, where he remains in custody.
