Cop charged with violent robbery

A police officer was yesterday brought before a city court and charged with robbing a man of cash and other items.

According to the charge, Eulin Carthe, 33, allegedly robbed Michael Elliot, on January 1, of $1,600 and two silver chains, valued $60,000, and at the time, before, or after the robbery, made use of personal violence.

Carthe, of 53 Plum Park, Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the charge, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

He told the court that he did not know the complainant but that his mother had compensated the man in the presence of a police officer for the articles he claimed were stolen.

Elliot admitted that the silver chains were returned to him by the defendant’s mother but he alleged that the defendant tied him up and had taken them away.

The prosecution objected to bail based on the gravity of the charge.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently granted Carthe self-bail but placed him in the custody of the Guyana Police Force. The matter was then adjourned to August 15 and transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
