Thunderstorms force shutdown of GPL’s Garden of Eden plant

On Saturday, July 30, 2016, the Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL) Garden of Eden (GOE) operations were decommissioned due to damage sustained to the roof as a result of heavy thunderstorms.

GPL in a press release yesterday said that this resulted in water damage to the switchgear and controls.  Engineers rapidly isolated the area and immediately secured the roof with  tarpaulin to prevent further damage.

GPL said that this resulted in a significant number of customers from Hope to Timehri and Yarrowkabra on the East Bank Demerara and La Grange to Vriesland on the West Bank Demerara losing power for a short period while alternative sources were employed.

A team of engineers and contractors implemented a crisis management plan that saw temporary roof repairs and mopping up of the Control Room responsible for the switching of power into the GPL Grid areas that were affected.  Testing of the affected equipment started on Sunday and GOE operations were expected to return to normalcy last evening.
