The Georgetown court of Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that between May 29 and June 4, at Omai in the Essequibo River, Romel Sahadeo, 28, of 10 Austin Street, Campbellville, being a clerk or servant to Paul Daby, stole 710 grammes of raw gold, worth $5,700,050, and 80 drums of diesel, worth $4,000,000. The articles carried a total value of $9,700,500.

Sahadeo, a former taxi driver, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick did not object to bail but told the court that if bail is granted to the accused, he should be ordered to lodge his passport at court and report to an officer-in-charge at a police station every week until completion of the trial.

Bail was subsequently set at $1,000,000 by the magistrate, who also ordered him to lodge his passport at the magistrates’ courts and report to Eve Leary every week.

The case was adjourned to September 6 for statements.
