His mother, Coleen Assign, explained to Stabroek News yesterday that the man went to the West Demerara Hospital to pick up his girlfriend who had been discharged when the accident happened. “Well we don’t know much but his girlfriend [who was  the pillion rider at the time of the accident] told us that when they were riding the bus didn’t have any lights on and it was until the bus reach to them then he put on his high beam and run into them,” the grief-stricken woman explained.

The bus then lost control and swerved into a nearby trench and Assign and his girlfriend were thrown off the bike. They were both rushed to the West Demerara Hospital and while his girlfriend sustained minor injuries, Assign was pronounced dead.

While there were several passengers in the bus none of them sustained any serious injuries.

It was also reported to Stabroek News that the bus was speeding along the road at the time of the accident.

The driver of the bus is currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
