Two arrested after robbery of Japanese tourists at seawall

Two persons have been arrested after the robbery of three Japanese nationals and a local taxi driver, who were attacked while sightseeing at the Ogle seawall on Tuesday.

Acting Commander of ‘C’ Division Paul Williams said the perpetrators reportedly followed the visitors from the city and went to their vehicle while they were out.

Police, in a statement, said the robbery occurred around 1.10 pm.

Williams noted that the Japanese nationals observed the robbers at the vehicle, which was driven by Abdool Rahim, 38 of Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara, and immediately went to enquire what was happening. However, they were then relieved of a quantity of currency by the bandits, who had guns.

The police statement stated that the foreigners were robbed of two video cameras, valued $560,000, a laptop, valued $300,000, $820,000 cash, four cellular phones, valued $300,000, and twenty three video tapes valued $106,000.

The perpetrators escaped in a car that did not carry any registration number plate.

However, police were able to track an iPhone of one of the victims, which led to the arrest of a woman. Williams said when the woman was apprehended by the police, she co-operated and explained that she had purchased the phone from a man, who was arrested by the police yesterday.
