Shopkeeper jailed for having pistol, ammo

Lisolette La Cruz, the shopkeeper who was charged last year for the unlawful possession of a pistol, ammunition and a small quantity of ganja, was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail.

The charges against La Cruz stated that on August 6, 2015, at Tucville Squatting Area, she was in possession of a pistol and six live rounds of matching ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence. On the same day and location, she was also alleged to have had in her possession two grammes of cannabis.

La Cruz was found guilty of all the charges at the conclusion of a trial that was conducted by Magistrate Fabayo Azore in a Georgetown court. She was absent when the verdict was delivered yesterday.

Although absent for the ruling made, La Cruz was sentenced to three years in jail and fined $50,000 for the firearm and ammunition charges, while she was fined $5,000 and ordered to perform one month of community service at the East La Penitence Police Station every Friday for the narcotics charge.
