Lethem Town Council completes rehabilitation of market, adds tarmac

Vendors from Lethem and the savannahs now have access to the recently rehabilitated market and vending tarmac, Mayor Carlton Beckles has said.

In a recent interview with Stabroek News, the Mayor was pleased to announce that the rehabilitative work to the complex that houses the Lethem Market, which was undertaken by the Town Council, was complete. This, along with a recently constructed open air tarmac, is expected to present a more comfortable and productive market environment for both vendors and consumers, Beckles said.

Explaining the rationale behind the construction of the open air tarmac, the Mayor stated that it was done to allow those vendors who would journey from the Savannah areas to have a place to sell since they would not have the privilege of having stalls in the market itself.

Additionally, Beckles stated that when not being used by vendors, the tarmac can also be accessed by those who are interested in using it for recreational purposes such as street football.

Further, he pointed out work that continues to be done to rehabilitate several sport facilities across the district including the Tabatinga Recreational Ground. The council has completed the fence of the ground.

Also expected to be rolled out soon are plans to implement a subsidized bus service for students whose parents are unable to afford public transportation for them to and from schools within the district at the beginning of the new academic year.

Elaborating on this, the Mayor explained that the council continues to engage residents who stand to benefit from the service for their input so that the service would be properly carried out.

However, Beckles explained that the route to be taken by the bus is yet to be decided upon since the council is adamant on a finding the most progressive route to allow a more efficient student pick up and drop off to include children from as many constituencies as possible.

This specific plan, he said, has seen tremendous positive feedback from residents in the area.

In the meantime, he said, the council is working tirelessly to draft proposals that would be presented to the relevant agencies regarding solid waste management and road improvements within the township.
