GDF sergeant injured in simulated attack

A sergeant in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is now recuperating after he was burned on Thursday whilst on an exercise outside of Georgetown.

According to a press release from the GDF, Sergeant 17548 Christopher Alleyne was injured on Exercise Homeguard when his section came under attack around 17:45 hrs. Alleyne, a Platoon Sergeant, was attempting to raise an alarm after a simulated attack was carried out on his position, when a flare fell on his trousers and ignited. His left leg above his knee sustained first and second degree burns as a result.

Alleyne was air dashed to Base Camp Ayanganna, then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he received treatment and was discharged, the release said. It added that Alleyne is currently a patient at the Medical Centre at Base Camp Ayanganna in high spirits.
