Bound body of alleged pirate found at Number 68 backdam

An alleged pirate was found dead with his hands and feet bound around 19:30 hrs yesterday at the Number 68 Village backdam.

The dead man has been identified as Levan Chanderpaul, a fisherman.

According to a police source, there were visible marks of violence about the body.

The source explained that a young man was coming out from the backdam when he discovered the body. The young man then alerted the police.

According to information gathered Chanderpaul was facing a simple larceny and threatening language charge in the courts. However, the man was a no-show on his court date August 23, and his mother appeared on his behalf.

On December 22, 2011 Chanderpaul was one of five men remanded to prison on a charge of robbery under arms. The allegation was that he, Verasammy Rawana, Vishal Gowkarran, Mohan David and Avendardat Deodat all of Corentyne and Corriverton had attacked and robbed a fishing boat out at sea. It is unclear how that case ended.

An investigation has been launched into Chanderpaul’s murder.
