Man gets three months in jail for snatching phone from bus passenger

A man was yesterday sentenced to three months in prison by a city magistrate after he was found guilty of snatching a phone from a minibus passenger.

Magistrate Annette Singh found that Sheik Majid stole a Samsung Galaxy phone, worth $140,000, from Leon Kurt.

The offence was committed on August 16th at a bus park in Georgetown. The magistrate said she found Majid guilty based on the overwhelming evidence that was brought by the prosecution.

The police prosecutor had told the court that Majid was watching Kurt, who was on his phone, when he was boarding a Route 42 minibus. Kurt went and sat near a window, which allowed Majid to snatch the phone.

According to the prosecutor, Majid snatched the phone when the bus pulled off and he tried to escape but was caught my public-spirited citizens, who took him to a mobile police outpost, where he was arrested.

The magistrate subsequently sentenced Majid to three months in jail.
