Nephew charged with killing Cummings Lodge woman during theft of $10,000

Kevin Mohan, the man accused of stabbing his aunt to death at her Cummings Lodge home, was yesterday charged with the crime and remanded to prison.

Mohan, also known as ‘Chucky,’ 32, of 315 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge, which states that on September 4, at Cummings Lodge, he murdered Anita Mohan, during the course of a robbery, where he stole $10,000 from the deceased.

The charge was read to Mohan by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.

According to the accused, the police beat him into signing a statement confessing to the murder of his aunt. “How I go kill my aunt, yo worship? I does live with her. They [the police] tie black bag around my head and beat me fo sign to the charge,” Mohan told the magistrate.

He maintained that he knew nothing about the murder.

Police had said the man confessed to the crime and implicated an accomplice who was being sought.

Mohan, a mason, further explained that he had been previously charged with the assault of a young woman and the case is currently at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

Police Prosecutor Sherlock King told the court that the investigation of the woman’s murder is complete.

After being told that the police are ready to proceed with the start of the preliminary inquiry into the charge, Magistrate Ally-Seepaul remanded Mohan to prison and adjourned the case until October 28, when the preliminary inquiry is expected to begin at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Anita Mohan, called ‘Sandra,’ 48, a vendor, was found dead by her son, Imtiaz Khan, lying on her kitchen floor with stab wounds about her upper body.

Khan also said his mother’s head was bashed in.
