Suspect in market fatal stabbing held

The young man suspected to be responsible for the stabbing to death of Unity resident, Omesh Chetram on Saturday was held by the police shortly after the incident.

Acting Commander of ‘A’ Division, Marlon Chapman yesterday said that acting on information received ranks from the Guyana Police Force apprehended the suspect. He is presently in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Reports had revealed that thirty-four-year-old Chetram, who is said to be a vagrant, was involved in an argument with a man between 11:30 pm on Saturday and 1:30 am Sunday during which he was stabbed once to his abdomen.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Vendors around the Bourda Market area had related to Stabroek News that Chetram would often be around the market doing odd jobs for them.

While the circumstances surrounding the argument remain unclear, one vendor had said, “I don’t know what exactly happen but I know it start at the intersection.

They de arguing all the time and it reach till down by the stand”, while pointing out that the young man who allegedly stabbed Chetram was one of the stall owners’ son.

The parents of the suspect were taken into custody but have since been released.
