Pattensen woman charged with human trafficking

A businesswoman was yesterday granted half a million dollars in bail after she was charged with human trafficking.

The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that at Pattensen, Sharlene Oxley, 51, of 208 Pattensen, East Coast Demerara, recruited, transported and harboured a women for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Oxley, a mother of four pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Police prosecutor Sophia Sardinha, objected to bail based on the nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts. The prosecutor, who did not give any facts in the matter, told the court that investigations are complete and that the evidence against the accused is strong.

However, Oxley’s lawyer Peter Hugh, told the court that his client, who owns a small business has no previous conviction and she was released on station bail. The lawyer said that Oxley has been co-operating with the police and as such she should be granted bail. He assured the court that his client will lodge her passport.

The chief magistrate subsequently granted Oxley $500,000 bail. Her matter was adjourned until September 26.
