Jamaican woman remanded on ganja trafficking charge

A Jamaican national was yesterday remanded to prison by a city court after being charged with having a quantity of cannabis in her possession.

Carline Grant, 29, was accused of having in her possession 629 grammes of cannabis for trafficking.

Grant pleaded guilty with explanation to being in possession of the drugs, which were discovered on September 17 at a Potaro location.

However, when asked by the magistrate what the explanation was, Grant began to whisper and was subsequently ordered to approach the magistrate along with her attorney, Adrian Thompson.

Although much of what was said was inaudible to the remainder of the court, the defendant could be heard stating that she was ordered by an inspector to pay $300,000.

This allegation led to the magistrate ordering the investigating rank to also approach the bench so as to clarify the allegations being made by the defendant.

Subsequent to the defendant’s explanation, a not guilty plea was entered on her behalf by the magistrate.

Attorney Thompson told the court that his client, who is three months pregnant, was granted a six-month-long stay in Guyana but has since overstayed her time after having met someone.

Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt objected to bail based on the grounds that no special reason was given for bail along with the fact that the accused is not a Guyanese resident.

Bail was later refused by Magistrate Latchman and the matter was adjourned to September 26, when, it will be heard by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
