Boy, 14, killed in Abary Creek accident, man injured

A 14-year-old boy is now dead and a man injured after a freak accident at Abary Creek.

While the dead teenager has not yet been identified, according to information gathered, he had arrived in Abary in a truck, along with a farmer from Mahaicony who was conducting business concerning rice. The injured man, however, has been identified as Conward Williams.

A police source told Stabroek News that around 6.30 pm yesterday a pontoon with a tractor was attempting to cross the creek some seven miles away from the road, while the truck driver was assisting by using the truck light to provide illumination. In the process, the driver exited the truck in an effort to assist in the crossing and apparently did not engage the brakes, which led to the truck sliding and pinning the man and the teenager.

The source also revealed that the area where the truck was parked was swampy. The boy did not survive, but Williams sustained broken bones and other injuries to his leg. He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital then transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and then later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Meanwhile, according to further information gathered, the truck and tractor both belong to Williams’s employer.
