The Buddy’s Pool Hall and Night Club on Sheriff Street have been closed  following a fall in business and a medical school is now operating in a part of the huge building.

The pool hall and the night club had been popular on the entertainment scene for more than a decade and they have now been quietly closed. The gym is continuing to operate in the building.

A medical school, the Alexander American University School of Medicine, operated by Indian nationals, would soon be opened on the second floor of the building.

When this newspaper dropped in yesterday, staff were still in the process of setting up the university but no one was available to give any information.

Ryan Shivraj, Managing Director of Buddy’s, told Stabroek News yesterday that three months ago the university started renting the second floor of the building where the pool hall was located.

The first floor which housed the night club, as well as other sections of the building are also up for rental.

Shivraj, who is based at the Brickdam office, said that they decided to close the two businesses after the “sales have been declining over the years.”

He said they wanted to “get into long-term business because the times have changed and people are finding other things to do, like watching movies.”

He said too that they are also trying to find tenants for the other properties they have around the city while they have houses available for sale at Good Hope and Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara.
