Family say being kept in dark on probe of Sheriff St fatal accident

The family of Abeka Trotman, the four-year-old who died in an accident on Sheriff Street just over two weeks ago, say they are being kept in the dark on the investigation.

Abeka was travelling with her mother, Abiola Trotman, and her grandmother, Cheryl Williams, in a car, PMM 1426, on September 10, on Sheriff Street, which was hit by a pick-up truck.

Abeka was thrown out of the window and onto the roadway on impact. She was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Abiola Trotman, Williams and the driver of the car were also rushed to the hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.

They were recently discharged from the hospital and while she and her daughter have recovered well, Williams noted that they have been kept in the dark about the investigation. “We haven’t heard anything from the police and they haven’t told us anything so we don’t know what’s happening,” she said.

“We just want them to hurry and finish with whatever they have to do so we could get some peace of mind,” the woman added.

While the two drivers have been discharged from the hospital also, none of them has been charged with the accident. The police had stated that case file has been sent to the Direction of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Williams told Stabroek News although that she is feeling better physically, her daughter has not accepted her loss fully. “She had her [Abeka’s] picture today in church and she was holding it. I guess that makes her feel better,” the woman explained.

She pointed out that all she can recall from the accident was seeing the pick-up racing towards them at a high speed before passing out. “We were in the back turning the street to go home and all I remember was seeing the car speeding towards we and before I could say, ‘Oh God,’ it just went dark,” the woman explained, while adding that she regained consciousness in the hospital.
