Education Ministry launches probe at Berbice school over reports of drug use

The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into a Berbice school following allegations that a teacher was using drugs and encouraging students to do the same by saying “It is okay to take a pull”.

Contacted, the chairman of the board of the school confirmed the launching of the investigation after a meeting was held with a team from the Ministry of Education yesterday afternoon. He said the media will be updated once the investigation is over, adding that many noble and good institutions’ names are being lambasted by people with erroneous information.

Meanwhile, staff attached to the school told Stabroek News that they have also longed for an investigation by the Ministry of Education. When asked if they ever witnessed the teacher accused of smoking drugs doing so on the school premises, they replied “No”. However, they said they have noticed inexplicable changes in his behaviour, confirming what the students’ parents have said. “Sometimes he come to work and behave good, then other times he gon stomp of his feet and behave weird,” one staff member said.

Another staff member claimed that the teacher uses indecent language regularly during school hours. The staff believe that there is a lot of wrongdoing in the school which needs to be identified and dealt with. They believe that only the Ministry of Education can step in and bring about effective change.
