Kitty man charged over $10M land fraud

A Kitty man was yesterday asked to post $1.5 million bail for his release after he was charged with falsely obtaining $10 million to purchase a plot of land.

The charge read to Rajesh Sahadeo stated that on September 7, 2015, at Georgetown, he conspired to obtain $10 million, by way of a Republic Bank cheque from Lloyd Singh, on the pretence that he knew Shaneann Boston, also known as Venice LaRose, was in the position to sell a plot of land located at Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara.

Sahadeo, 41, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

The court heard that Singh claimed that Sahadeo brought Boston to him to sell the land but he discovered, after paying $10 million, that the land was not for sale and the land did not belong to her.

However, according to attorney Glenn Hanoman, who represented Sahadeo, his client had also been conned by the woman and had made a report to police on six occasions. As a result, he said the man was surprised that he was being charged.

Boston, according to Hanoman, presented Sahadeo, who was assisting Singh, with an identification card prior to the land being purchased but it was discovered that it was forged.

He added that it was also discovered that the land does not belong to Boston, who is now wanted by the police.

Police prosecutor Vishnu Hunt, who said Sahadeo and Singh are known to each other, made no objection to bail.

Magistrate Latchman later set bail at $1,500,000 despite Hanoman’s request for a reduced sum since Sahadeo would be unable to pay the amount. The matter was later adjourned to November 2, when it will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
