Tucville man charged with receiving stolen video game console

After allegedly buying a video game console and games for way below market value, a father of four on Monday found himself in a city court charged with the possession of stolen property.

Steve Whyte, 41, of Tucville Squatting Area, pleaded with Magistrate Judy Latchman to reduce his bail, set at $250,000, while telling her that he did not know the items were stolen.

Whyte said he bought the items for $15,000 to help out a youth.

It is alleged that Whyte, on October 6, at Georgetown, received from Keith James a DVD player, a PlayStation and four PlayStation games, all valued at $201,000, knowing that they were stolen or illegally obtained. They were the property of Andrew Albert.

Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves objected to bail based on the seriousness and the prevalence of the offence. He said that if Whyte were granted bail he would not return to court for trial.

However, the magistrate granted bail and ordered that Whyte return to court on November 4 for statements and assignment of the case.
