Two remanded on gun and ammo charges

Two men were on Tuesday remanded to prison after they each faced separate charges of unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition.

Nelson Wayne, 30, is accused of having in his possession a .380-calibre pistol and three live matching rounds on October 6 in Georgetown, without being a licensed firearm holder.

Wayne adamantly denied the charges.

According to Wayne, he only had a pellet gun, which he took away from a young boy who had used it to shoot at him. He maintained that the items mentioned in the charge were found on someone else.

The magistrate heard that Wayne had a matter of a similar nature before the court.

Wayne and three others had charges of unlawful  firearm and ammunition possession against them dismissed due to a lack of evidence.

Meanwhile, Carl Carter, 32, was charged with having a .38 revolver with four matching rounds, found on October 8 at Main Street, without being a licensed firearm holder.

Carter, a miner, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Police prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves noted that Carter is currently on trial for a similar charge and would have been on bail when the present offences were committed.

While Carter quietly made his way out of the courtroom after Magistrate Judy Latchman remanded him, Wayne, who was also remanded, could be heard repeating to an officer “God loves y’all.”

Both cases were adjourned to November 2, when it will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
