Kitty bus operators cleared of wounding charges

A route 40 (Kitty/ Campbellville) bus driver and his conductor, who were charged with unlawfully wounding passengers, had the charges against them dismissed last week.

Asahel Williams and Quacy Sealy were accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Joel Carew on June 21, at David and Pere streets, Kitty. Williams was also separately charged with wounding Emmanuel Edwards on the same day at the same place.

During the proceedings before Magistrate Judy Latchman last Tuesday, the prosecution stated that while one complainant would have given evidence against the defendants, the other never returned to court to complete his testimony. As a result, the prosecution said that there was no prima-facie case established against the defendants.

The charges against them were subsequently dismissed by Magistrate Latchman.

On the day of the alleged attacks, the defendants were operating their route 40 bus, in which Carew and Edwards were passengers. An argument ensued between the defendants and the complainants over the bus fare, which led to a fight. The court had been told that a Guinness bottle and a pair of scissors were used by the defendants to inflict injuries on the complainants.
