Police are treating the death of New Amsterdam welder Timothy Fraser as a murder after an autopsy found that he died as a result of blunt trauma to his head and two persons have since been held.
Fraser, 44, of Savannah Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam was discovered in the Mazaruni River on Sunday, just one day after he was reported missing.
On Wednesday, government pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh performed an autopsy on Fraser’s body and found that in addition to blunt trauma being the cause of death, he had died two days before he was reported missing.
According to a police source, two persons have since been arrested as the man’s death is currently being treated as a murder.
Fraser’s mother, Valarie Fraser, had told Stabroek News that on Saturday last she received a call from one of her son’s co-workers, who informed her that he was missing.
She relayed that at first she was told that her son, fully dressed with his welding clothes, was waiting for a boat and had decided to go for a swim. She was told when the boat arrived, only Fraser’s clothes were seen on the ground. However, she said after phoning other persons in the area, she was then told that Fraser was sitting on a metal chair in a boat when he fell overboard with the chair.
However, relatives have since said that they have learned that Fraser was allegedly beaten and then thrown into the river. As a result, they are appealing to investigators to get to the bottom of his death.
Fraser was laid to rest on Thursday in New Amsterdam.
