A joint murder charge which was expected to be read to former Demico cook Alexis Turpin and her lover Stephon Barlow, who are accused of the fatal beating of the woman’s partner in July, was postponed as the prosecution is awaiting further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Family members of the deceased, Sherwin Johnson, turned up in court yesterday to hear a new charge of murder read to Turpin and Barlow. However, this anticipation was dashed when Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that the file is now in the Chambers of the DPP awaiting further advice.
Jeffers asked the court for more time to be granted, since the investigating officer had just personally delivered the file to the DPP.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently adjourned the case until December 8.
Turpin and Barlow were initially charged separately with the attempted murder of Johnson. It was alleged that they had used a crowbar to unlawfully and maliciously wound Johnson, with whom the woman shared a child, on July 2 at Georgetown. He later succumbed in hospital.
