Berbice restaurateur arrested over assault on dog-food vendor

A 33-year-old man who operates a Chinese restaurant and bar at Main and Chapel streets, New Amsterdam, was arrested yesterday after he allegedly beat a dog-food vendor with a piece of wood.

According to information gathered, the dog-food vendor, Osarin Stuart of Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, and the accused had an altercation. The row, it was stated, stemmed from Stuart operating his dog-food stall in front of the Chinese restaurant.

A police press release stated that Stuart had armed himself with a piece of wood during the argument, but subsequently dropped it and was in the process of walking away, when the accused allegedly picked up the same piece of wood and dealt him several lashes to his head and left leg.

Stuart was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital; his condition is said to be serious.
