Ex-cop held over murder of Sterling Products guard

Exactly two years after gunmen stormed the Sterling Products Limited compound at Providence, East Bank Demerara and shot and killed security guard Wilfred Stewart, a fourth suspect was arrested in connection with the crime.

The arrest of the suspect, said to be an ex-police officer, was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who told Stabroek News that acting on information received, ranks on hursday evening arrested the man in Georgetown.

The man was initially wanted for questioning but could not be located during the early phase of the investigation.

Three persons—Orin Arthur, Uree Varswyk and the now deceased Rayon Paddy—had been jointly charged with the murder of Stewart.

Arthur and Varswyk were recently committed to stand trial for the murder. Paddy, was one of the 17 inmates who perished during the March 3rd Camp Street Prison fire.

The attack on Sterling Products Limited offices occurred on the evening of December 8, 2014.

Stewart, of Graham’s Hall, was on duty when a gang stormed the compound. After fatally shooting Stewart and wounding Mario Gohill, an Indian national working as the company chemist, the invading bandits made their way to the accounts department, where they met with a locked safe and decided to abort the robbery and flee the compound.
