Three years in jail for cocaine possession

A man was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail after he admitted to having four grammes of cocaine.

Michael Deonarine

The charge against Michael Deonarine stated that he had the drug in his possession on November 26, at Bourda Market.

During his arraignment on November 30 before Magistrate Judy Latchman, Deonarine had pleaded not guilty to the crime.

However, when Deonarine yesterday appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly, he changed his plea to guilty and apologised for wasting the court’s time. The 33-year-old man was then sentenced to three years in jail, which is the minimum mandatory sentence.

Police said that Deonarine was sitting on a chair in Bourda Market when he was approached by ranks, who were acting on information. A search was then conducted on him and cocaine was found on him along with improvised smoking utensils.
