Logos Hope docks today, opens Thursday

Logos Hope, the world’s largest floating book fair, is scheduled to arrive in Guyana today, and will bring along with it knowledge, help and hope.

The ship, which will stock Christian, educational and children’s books, docks at the Guyana National Shipping Wharf, but will be open to the public from Thursday, December 22 to January 8.

Apart from the sale of books, the crew will be involved in several community enhancement projects, including a water purifying project, which will see them sharing out water purification systems to eight villages in the Pomeroon; conducting eye tests and sharing of eyeglasses; carrying out programmes for inmates in prisons, as well as donating books to the prison libraries; and lending their manpower to do community service work in orphanages.

During a press briefing held yesterday, it was related that the 400-member crew will be supported by 20 local volunteers. Besides their community work, there are a host of events planned on board the ship for the two weeks the crew will be here.

Among those events is the “Meet the World” cultural event, where patrons can experience the unique cultures of the 400-member crew, who represent over 60 different nationalities. The cultural event, which will be hosted on Wednesday, 28 December and Wednesday, January 4, 2017, from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm both days, will be accessible at a cost of $500.

There will be also be theatrical performances of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written by C S Lewis, on board the ship on Friday, December 30 from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm and then again on Saturday, January 7, from 12. 30 pm to 2.30 pm and later that day from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Tickets for those live performances also cost $500.

In addition to this, the crew will be expecting their 6 millionth visitor while docked in Guyana. This lucky individual will gain the opportunity to meet the Director and Captain of the crew and will also receive gifts to mark the occasion.

The entrance fee for the Logos Hope is $100, but adults over 65 years of age and children under 12 years of age enter for free. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult in order to gain entry.

The Logos Hope will be closed on Mondays but open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and Sundays from 2 pm to 8 pm. There are, however, a few exceptions to these times, including the opening day, December 22, when it will be open from 2 pm to 8 pm; December 24, when opening time will be from 10 am to 2 pm and December 31, when it will be open from 10 am to 2 pm. The ship will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

It was stated that all events have limited seating and as such, tickets will be made available at Giftland Mall and aboard the ship.
