Jamaica sugar company makes 384 positions redundant

(Jamaica Gleaner) The positions of 384 sugar workers employed by the Chinese-owned PanCaribbean Sugar Company were made redundant yesterday.

The redundancy affects 279 workers at the Monymusk Sugar Factory in Clarendon and 105 workers at the Frome Sugar Factory in Westmoreland.

The workers are expected to receive their notice pay on January 29 and their severance pay on February 12.

This latest round of redundancies follows a similar exercise at other sugar factories such as Golden Grove, in St Thomas, the Appleton Estate in Clarendon and Long Pond, in Trelawny.

At least 1,000 sugar workers have lost their jobs since last August.
