Barbados airport closed after air traffic controllers strike

(Jamaica Gleaner) The Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados has been forced to close because of protest action by air traffic controllers.

In a release today, the airport authorities said all flights in and out of the island have been cancelled until 6 o’clock this evening.

Among the affected carriers is regional airline LIAT.

In a travel advisory issued just before 11 o’clock this morning, the Antigua-based carrier said all flights to from Barbados for today, have been delayed.

The protest, called by the Barbados Workers Union, is in solidarity with the Barbados Water Authority workers who are also on strike and are demanding the payment of BBD $33 million in outstanding increments.
