Cane Grove man dies after beaten, robbed by gang

A 22-year-old Cane Grove man was robbed and badly beaten by a group of men on Friday evening while he was returning home from a ‘lime.’ He succumbed to his injuries hours later.

Deokumar Besdeo, called “Buddy” and “Kevin,” a cane harvester of Lot 77 Cane Grove Sawaya, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was left on the roadway in Cane Grove after a group of seven men attacked him on his way home and dealt him several lashes about his body, mostly to the head, with a piece of wood. He was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he succumbed.

According to a police press release, at around 9:30pm on Friday, Besdeo was reportedly involved in an altercation with a group of men in a vehicle along the roadway at Cane Grove. He was subsequently found on the roadway with injuries and admitted to the GPH where he later succumbed.

When Stabroek News visited his home yesterday afternoon, relatives and villagers were still trying to come to grips with what had transpired. His 21-month-old son continuously called for “Da Da” while relatives could only look at him, hoping he would understand that his father is no more.

Speaking to Stabroek News, Ranjeeta Baig called “Sherry” said she last saw her husband on New Year’s morning when he left for work. “He does usually left for work like 5 O’clock but that morning he left lil early because he say is holiday and he want come home early,” the weeping wife related.

The woman said while she was in Berbice visiting her mother, she received a call at around 10:30pm from a relative informing her that someone had beaten up Besdeo and he was lying on the road unconscious. The woman said she informed her father-in-law who rushed to the scene where he saw his son bleeding profusely and rushed him to the hospital.

Baig said while it is still unclear why the men would want to take her husband’s life, she was made to understand that he was at a shop which is located a street away from home, drinking and playing “chic chic” where he won a large amount of money. “I hear he win nuff money and I don’t know if them boy went there playing and see too or they receive information but if you see how them beat he,” Baig said.

The woman related that when she arrived at the GPH, she saw Besdeo’s lifeless body lying on a bed with his entire face swollen to an extent that she could barely recognise him.

Besdeo leaves to mourn his siblings, his 21-month-old son and his parents. He was described as a hardworking and easygoing person who did not have any enemies.
