Mon Repos carpenter stabbed to death by cousin

A Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara family was sent into a state of shock on New Year’s Day after a carpenter was stabbed to death allegedly by his cousin.

Dead is 34-year-old Ganesh Ramlakhan, a carpenter of Lot 127 Mon Repos Pasture. He was fatally stabbed allegedly by his cousin Vishal Baldeo called “Leader” or “Vicky” who fled after the incident. Up to late yesterday, police continued to comb the area in search of the suspect.

Police said the incident occurred around 2.15pm on Friday. In a statement, the police said Ramlakhan became involved in an argument with another man at Mon Repos during which he was stabbed about his body. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead-on-arrival,

According to police reports, Ramlakhan’s murder is the fourth in two days. At his home yesterday, relatives gathered while preparations for the wake were in progress.

Bibi Ameena Hack, a cousin-in-law of the dead man, who witnessed the incident, related to Stabroek News that around midday on Friday, she and Ramlakhan were talking when Baldeo pulled up in front of the house in a car and walked towards Ramlakhan and whispered something in his ear. The man responded “what the [expletive] wrong with yuh boy?”

The woman related that immediately after that, the suspect hit Ramlakhan at the back of his neck and ran into the house where he armed himself with two knives from the kitchen drawer. “I try to hold he back and ask he where he going with them and he push me down and run outside to Ganesh,” Hack said.

She added that a scuffle ensued between the two men and Baldeo dealt Ramlakhan a stab in the region of his heart. As the wounded Ramlakhan attempted to flee, the suspect pushed him to the ground and dealt him two more stabs in his abdomen and back.

Stabroek News understands that the suspect also dealt Ramlakhan’s father some chops about his body when he tried to intervene. Ramlakhan eventually collapsed to the ground where he took his last breath.

As Hack rushed outside to inform her husband, who was on the street, of what was transpiring, Baldeo managed to escape.

Another relative related that early yesterday morning, Baldeo called Hack and told her he was behind the Stabroek Market and they immediately informed the police. “We tell he fuh turn he self in and he put down the phone,” the woman said, while adding that “no righted person would do that to somebody, is smoke he did smoke up like he usually do.”

Ramlakhan’s body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy which is expected to be done tomorrow

He leaves to mourn his two children and other relatives and friends.
