DPP recommends rape charge against cop

-alleged to have violated 14-year-old who sought help

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended that a policeman be charged with raping a 14 year old girl who had reportedly gone to him for assistance.

The matter has been engaging the attention of the DPP’s Chambers since last October after the alleged offence was committed. The policeman who is attached to an East Bank Demerara Police Station is being accused of raping the teen shortly after she went to him and reported that she had been abducted and had managed to escape. The rape was said to have occurred at the policeman’s home.

In a press release yesterday, the DPP’s Chambers said that the two police files in the matters of alleged rape committed on a 14-year-old girl and abduction committed on the same person have been returned with legal advice.

With regards to the alleged rape, the release said that legal advice has been given for the policeman to be charged with the offence of rape of a child under 16 years of age. Stabroek News has since learnt that that file will be returned to the police today and it is expected that the appropriate action will be taken soon after. The release stated too that in the matter of abduction, legal advice has been given for the teen to be referred to the Child Care and Protection Agency. This newspaper was told that the agency has been given the task of questioning the teen and once that is done the file will be returned to the Chambers for advice.

The files were returned to the police on one occasion for detectives to do additional work.
