Taxi driver in Turkeyen collision granted bail

A 68-year-old taxi driver who was involved in a collision at the University of Guyana access road was yesterday granted bail after appearing in court charged with driving carelessly.

It is alleged that on January 29th on the Turkeyen Public Road, Clifford Dodson of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, drove his car without due care and caution.

Dodson pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, which is being used to hear matters being dealt with by the Sparendaam Magistrate’s court, which is being rebuilt.

According to Police Prosecutor David Goodridge, at 11:10 am that day, Dodson was proceeding north on the UG access road when he switched lanes without using his indicator. As a result, he collided with another car.

Dodson’s lawyer Darren Wade in a bail application told the court that his client, who is a pensioner, should be released on his own recognizance.

However, Goodridge informed the court that Dodson was charged with careless driving some years back.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Ally-Seepaul granted bail in the sum of $40,000. Dodson was ordered to return to court on April 12th.
