Coastguard boat captain to be charged with death of Pomeroon man

Almost eight months after farmer Orton Benjamin died when a Coastguard vessel collided with his boat, the police have received advice to charge the captain of the vessel.

A police source informed Stabroek News that Adrian Levi will be charged soon with manslaughter.

The body of Benjamin, of Grant Recess, Lower Pomeroon River was discovered on June 26th, last year, two days after the mishap by his relatives.

Stabroek News had reported that a Coastguard vessel had collided with Benjamin’s boat while he was taking his wife, a teacher, to work around 8.45 am on June 24, 2015. The couple also had a five-year-old relative in the boat, who managed to swim ashore after the collision and escaped unhurt.

A post-mortem examination revealed that he died as a result of multiple injuries.
