Pedestrian overpasses, flyover for East Bank road

The 50th Anniversary Independence Arch, which was officially unveiled yesterday, was the first of a list of major upgrades slated for the East Bank Demerara Road (EBD), including the construction of three pedestrian overpasses and a flyover.

This was conveyed by Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson, who said the pedestrian overpasses would be located at the Harbour Bridge, the intersection at Peter’s Hall, Eccles and at Houston, which were deemed as the locations with the most pedestrian movement.

The flyover, he said, is proposed for Diamond Housing Scheme because the area suffers from major traffic congestion, as it is the largest housing scheme in the country and is expected to grow.

Patterson touched on the EBD road expansion project which is in its final stages, noting that it is expected that travel time, traffic, accidents, and vehicle operating costs will be reduced upon its completion. Other plans for the EBD road include the installation of streetlights, traffic lights, road markings and road signs.
