Fourth ex-TPL worker charged over theft of $2.8M in plywood

Lakeram, one of the four former workers who allegedly stole almost $3 million in goods from Toolsie Persaud Limited (TPL), was last Friday charged.

Lakeram (only name given), 66,  was to be charged on April 21 along with Jacqueline Mangru, Junior Joseph, 55, and Oliver Coats, 66, all former employees of TPL. However, he had not been present.

The charge against him states that between June 5 and November 7, 2012, being employed with TPL, he stole 12 crates of plywood, valued $2.8 million.

Lakeram pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat told the court that his client was never told to attend court and an arrest warrant was issued for him. He added that his client strongly denies committing the crime.

The prosecution made no objection to bail and the magistrate set bail at $75,000.

June 13 is when the matter is set to be called again.
