Two shot in Kitty road rage over parking

A licensed firearm holder was yesterday afternoon allegedly assaulted by residents of Kitty, after he shot two men during an argument which reportedly stemmed from the parking of a vehicle.

Navin Tiwarie, 21, of David Street, Kitty and Sydell Bourne, 44, a miner of Robb Street and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, were shot and are currently both patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). The incident occurred around 5 pm at Alexander and Thomas streets, Kitty, Georgetown.

Bourne sustained a single gunshot wound to his shoulder, while Tiwarie was shot in the back and was rushed for emergency surgery. His condition was listed as critical and up to last evening his relatives were waiting at the hospital.

The alleged shooter, David Sugrim, 36, of Section ‘A’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara who was reportedly beaten by persons in the community after the incident was also taken to the GPH for medical treatment. He was later transferred to the Balwant Singh Hospital.

Stabroek News understands that Tiwarie and Sugrim were involved in an argument over the parking of Sugrim’s vehicle, when Sugrim allegedly whipped out his firearm and discharged several rounds in the direction of Tiwarie.

According to reports, Sugrim was about to park his vehicle on the roadway in the vicinity of Alexander and Thomas streets, when Tiwarie reportedly objected.

Bourne, who was at a wash bay located close by, saw what was transpiring and held onto Sugrim. As a result, they both fell to the roadway and Bourne was shot to the left shoulder.

When this newspaper visited the scene, a woman, who was imbibing at the nearby bar said she heard several gunshots and ran for shelter. According to her, when she looked across the road she saw that Bourne was lying on the roadway bleeding profusely. She immediately called a taxi and rushed him to the hospital.

Another man said he was standing on the roadway, a short distance away with some friends when they heard loud arguments. Within a short time, he said, he noticed a scuffle and gunshots were heard.

Investigations are ongoing.
