GPL suffers another shutdown

At approximately 10:35 yesterday morning, a burnt feeder panel at the Old Sophia substation caused a shutdown of  the entire GPL Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) with the exception of the West Demerara feeders.

A release yesterday from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said that restoration efforts began within nine minutes of the shutdown. By 12:40hrs, power was restored to all consumers except those in Sophia, Sheriff and Irving streets. This is due to remedial work being done to the panel which was likely to be completed by last evening.

Just over a week ago, GPL suffered another shutdown. At approximately 11:09 pm on July 12,  the DBIS suffered a shutdown as a result of a faulty connection or “Pot Head” that links the 69KV submarine cable to the overhead transmission lines at Kingston.

While restoration efforts were hampered to a minimal extent due to problems encountered while restarting some of the generating units at the Kingston Plants, power was restored to most consumers by 02:30 hrs.
